Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) have almost double the risk for seizures, with the risk even greater with sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor (S1PR) modulators, results of a new meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest.

Those with a progressive disease phenotype are also at particularly high risk.

A total of 120 patients experienced epileptic seizure events over a median follow-up of 2 years, resulting in a pooled incidence rate of 68.0 (95% CI, 49.1-86.9) per 100,000 patient-years, which investigators noted is significantly higher than the general population rate of 34.6
